Deviations from Design (2025)

"Deviations from Design" is a digital artwork that showcases how a very specific single design can transform into many variations.

The underlying pattern is always a square grid. This grid can be distorted in different ways. Each cell in the grid will iterate copies of itself, within itself. When doing this in alternating directions, a beautiful and perfect pattern emerges.

Even though this system is relatively straightforward, it shows a typical approach in generative art, system art and algorithmic art: make a specific and highly structured system. And then explore what happens when you change the logic in the code, or simply change some parameters. Even when starting with such highly structured foundation, this can lead to endless variations, and is what I love about generative, algorithmic systems.
